Guidelines for potential authors

Timber Press welcomes submissions pertaining to gardening, ornamental and edible horticulture, garden design, sustainability and green living, food and drink, natural history, and Pacific Northwest regional topics.

As a first step to submitting a manuscript, we recommend that you send (to the address below) a book proposal consisting of:

  • A letter describing the purpose and audience for your book, along with your background and qualifications.
  • An outline or table of contents and an estimate of the word count of the prospective manuscript.
  • A sample chapter or two.
  • Sample illustrations as well as an estimate of the total number and type of illustrations planned for your book.
  • Your schedule to complete the book.

If you wish to have the materials you submit returned to you, please so indicate and include return postage.

Within eight to twelve weeks, our acquisitions editor will let you know whether the proposed book seems suitable for Timber's publishing program. At that time we may ask to see further materials.

Generally we ask authors to submit book proposals early in the writing process, as this allows us to give editorial advice during the development phase and cuts down on the amount of revision needed later.

Very best wishes for the success of your writing project.
