The flowers have six perianth segments which flare widely. The six stamens are often longer than the perianth segments. The sword-shaped leaves are arranged in a flat fan and have a matte surface. The flower stem rises from the rootstock among the leaves and has several shorter leaves on its lower part. Flower colors are yellow, gold, orange, and red. Light, sandy, humus-rich, well-drained soil, in sun or light shade, ample moisture in spring and early summer, drier in late summer. Plant in late winter, spring, or fall, 3–4 in. (7.5–10 cm) deep, 8–12 in. (20–30 cm) apart ...
