The name from this species derives from the Latin ampullaceus, meaning like a flask or bottle, which refers to the shape of the sepaline tube. This species originates from cloud forests in Ecuador, where it grows epiphytically at elevations of 700 to 1500 m. The species was first discovered by Father Angel Andreetta of Cuenca, Ecuador, in August 1978. This is a captivating species, with semi-upright, 5 to 7.6 cm flowers, characterized by white and yellow-orange sepaline tubes, with varying amounts of orange on the exterior, and orange-yellow erect to reflexed tails.
