Bloom Day — May 2018

Storey staffers and friends salute the arrival of spring with scenes from their gardens.

Last month, we were still digging out from a punishing winter. (It actually snowed here on April 30). In May, we’re making up for lost time. To stroll down the street in the center of town here in North Adams today is to be confronted by flowering trees in whites and pinks, crabapples and magnolias practically vibrating with pollinator activity. Walkways are lined with tulips and daffodils and delicate sprays of violets. Dandelions dot the lawns and even our upside-down maples have started leafing out. It almost makes our endless winter feel like a distant memory … almost. It’s hard to know what the growing months ahead may hold — I’ve started to think that maybe, as New Englanders, we actually enjoy the unpredictability of the seasons — but for now, this greening feels mighty good. What’s blooming where you are? — Emily Spiegelman, Digital Content Manager

No blooms yet, but my forget-me-nots have sprouted! I’m doing a grow kit with my daughter, Maggie.

At long last I not only can see portions of my garden, but I actually worked out in it today for an hour or so getting rid of winter’s debris. Glorious!!! And I even have a few bloomers! Life is good!
