I THINK that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth’s flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
- Joyce Kilmner

The wealth of information, when combined with the wisdom of my teacher, Ken Farr, who’s a renowned dendrologist here in my home town of Ottawa, Canada, made for a most memorable course! Oh, and the books also served a great press for collecting & drying leaves of various trees for one of my class projects too!!

When we built our home 46 years ago, we tried to save every tree, and have been blessed with shade (and leaves) since. We did our best at landscaping with hardy and beautiful shrubs. Now we are losing a number of trees and shrubs to disease and drought, and we MUST replace them. We need help to know what will be our best options, and we know Michael Dirr has the answers. We not only would love to have a copy of this book; we NEED it!

MOst healpful book I have ever owned…

Windyglen

We all have a place we hold in our hearts,
A place in someway our roots did start
Roots run deep, I have come to know
Windyglen taught me so

Sycamore, Cedar, Fruit, Dogwood, Magnolia, Beech and Oak
They each have memories to offer

The Sycamore with lacy bark,
Reaching to the sky
Shading the house
More and more as the years went by

The Cedars stand guard at the lane
Watching us come and go
Providing birds with berries blue bright
And shelter, for nests and cold nights

The Fruit trees would bloom each year,
Never quite sure how much they would bear
Cherries, Apples, Pears and Plums
Turned out in jars to be shared

Dogwoods dotted the wood’s edge
White blossoms tinged in pink
Calling her to venture in
So it’s secrets she could hold dear

Magnolia watched out back,
Unfurling its flowers and sharing it’s scent
Never lasting very long
Bruising at the slightest touch

Beeches dot the woods,
Giving a smooth grey canvase for lover’s
Young and old alike
To immortalize their love

Oaks were abundant
red and white east and west
Giving her wood for her fire
Sharing acorns with friend and foe

She loved the place called Windyglen
We all know this to be true
But even more then it, she loved me and you

197 Liza November 29, 2011 at 10:51 am

WOW! This would be an awesome early Christmas present! :)

They mention this book all of the time on the garden talk show on our local public radio station, it sounds so handy!

300 Bryan D. November 30, 2011 at 1:41 pm

I’m a huge fan of Dirr’s other books and especially his recent iphone app. His newest book would make a great addition to my collection!

301 carolyn mullet November 30, 2011 at 2:44 pm

Count me in. Dirr’s simply the best.

302 Martha Tate November 30, 2011 at 3:53 pm

Have totally worn out my copy of Dr. Dirr’s Manual of Woody Landscape Plants. I love the fact that he visited some iconic gardeners and was always so kind and supportive of their gardens. The Hydrangea Lady, Penny McHenry, is now deceased, but his other fan (I think the feeling is mutual) is 95-year-old Margaret Moseley, who has a great collection of viburnums (along with lots of other shrubs). Dr. Dirr would be so proud of Hydrangea ‘Twist N Shout’ in Margaret’s garden.

303 Diana November 30, 2011 at 4:13 pm

This would be the perfect Christmas gift for my master gardener mother-in-law!

304 Sylvia November 30, 2011 at 4:18 pm

Dirr has been building on his success and providing more and more information with each new publication. I especially love his candid opinions on plants! Would love to have THIS publication as the base for the app Tree and Shrub Finder.

305 Kate Butler November 30, 2011 at 4:22 pm

It would be miraculous to win this book.

I really, really want that book. Pretty please?

307 Glennda November 30, 2011 at 6:34 pm

Can my garden library house one more book by Dr. Dirr? Me thinks the answer is, “Yes, please!” Thank you, Timber Press, for publishing his great works.

308 Christine Colley November 30, 2011 at 6:48 pm

I would LOVE to have Dr. Dirr’s book. I have already gone through (that is used until the books fell apart) two of his Trees and Shrubs Guide. Thank god for the IPAD version which shouldn’t fall apart. I met Dr. Dirr and his wife at the 2010 ASLA convention in Washington, DC. He couldn’t have been nicer.

309 Katrina November 30, 2011 at 6:50 pm

I had to use this book for my woody plants course in college. I probably would have used it more if it had this cool cover!

310 Denise November 30, 2011 at 6:59 pm

311 Wehaf November 30, 2011 at 7:19 pm

315 Jim Murrain December 1, 2011 at 2:15 am

Wow, this looks to be an amazing achievement. And finally in color, I’ll have to wash the soil off my hands very well before I open this book the first few hundred times.

316 Glen December 1, 2011 at 6:26 am

A great addition, indeed!

I’ve always, always wanted this book, but could never, ever justify spending that kind of money…even though my job involves tree identification, I just can’t swing the price of this book. I would be beyond excited, and grateful, if I were to be so lucky as to actually have my OWN copy of this!!!!
Thank you so much for this opportunity!

This would make a fantastic Christmas gift for my sustainable landscape designing wife!!!

336 Linda Karr December 1, 2011 at 11:29 am

I love all kinds of trees, but mostly those native to the Pacific Northwest. I began to appreciate trees as a kid as my father, as a hobby, collected seeds, mostly those of Douglas Fir and really blue spruce. He grew these seeds into the many trees that now are 30 to 45 years old that have reforested my small acreage in NE WA state.

337 Robin December 1, 2011 at 11:31 am

I can’t wait for this book! Every Dirr book I have is well worn, spine crumbling, highlighted, dog-eared and still I hold them together and use them all the time. The Dirr app is worth every penny I spent on it, and frankly I don’t know how I survived so long without it. Now, I just gotta get my hands on this new one! Thanks!

338 Pameal December 1, 2011 at 12:06 pm

Timber Press, you’ve done it again! When I look at my plant books, I see that you are the publisher of almost all of them. No matter how wonderful the net gets, NOTHING will ever replace reading a good book. (especially while sitting by a warm fire with a cat on my lap).

365 Frank Emert December 1, 2011 at 7:55 pm

Mike Dirr is an incredibleincredible plantsman whose body of work is beyond compare and this latest book solidifies his presence at the acme of the hort world. For all of us who have learned at his feet, we are so in debt and I for one would like to offer my thanks and appreciation to Mike for opening up a wider world of appreciation and knowledge that makes being a plant geek so incredibly satisfying!!

371 Jane Unger December 2, 2011 at 5:41 am

This is perfect timing. My old copy of Dirr is once again in need of duct tape to put it back together. It has to be the most used book in the house. A new one would be just what we need for Christmas.

372 Suzanne Dalla Betta December 2, 2011 at 6:00 am

As a Certified Arborist I refer to a previously published book from Dirr on trees and shrubs, and I would love to have a new edition for my own reference library.

378 Tammy Andros December 2, 2011 at 10:30 am

Wow! A chance to own another fabulous Dirr book. For free even! You can’t go wrong with that. We own several of Dr. Dirr’s books and find they are the ones we (my horticulturist husband and I) reach for the most often. We are also former students of Dirr. I love that we live in the same town so I get to run in to him from time to time. He is an incredible educator and all around good-guy. Love you Dr. Dirr!

379 Perry Andros December 2, 2011 at 10:34 am
