James D. Mauseth

Jim Mauseth was born in 1948. He studied the growth and development of cacti in tissue culture at the University of Washington, Seattle. He became a professor at the University of Texas in Austin in 1975, where he now focuses his research on the anatomy and development of cacti. Much of his career has concentrated on the evolution of cactus anatomy and how that has affected cactus diversification. Dr. Mauseth has published scientific articles in professional journals as well as articles for the general hobbyist, and he has written two textbooks, Botany: An Introduction to Plant Biology and Plant Anatomy. His other interests include bicycling, because its slow pace is a good way to look at the plants of a region. He resides in Austin, Texas.
